What is Toastmasters?

Since 1924, more than 4 million people around the world have become more confident speakers and leaders because of their participation in Toastmasters. Just like the pencils above – our members come in all sizes, colors and temperaments but have one thing in common: the desire to become more effective communicators.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 16,600 clubs in 143 countries that make up our global network of meeting locations. Membership in Toastmasters in one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. At roughly $125 annually (club dues may vary), it is also one of the most cost-effective skill-building tools available anywhere.

How Does It Work?

A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. A typical group has 20 to 30 members who meet weekly, biweekly or monthly. A typical meeting lasts one to two hours.

There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping, grammar and parliamentary procedure.

Members learn communication, leadership and other skills by working in one of eleven educational paths. These paths are designed to teach the foundations of public speaking and the elements of the selected path. The eleven options are:

• Dynamic Leadership
• Effective Coaching
• Engaging Humor
• Innovative Planning
• Leadership Development
• Motivational Strategies
• Persuasive Influence
• Presentation Mastery
• Strategic Relationships
• Team Collaboration
• Visionary Communication

You are not limited to one path. During your time in Toastmasters, you can follow as many paths as you’d like!
